Men
We are planning to hold regular events for men to get together - to socialise, have fun, and talk about issues and questions of faith.
So far we have had two film evenings, where we enjoyed whatching a film together and enjoying piizza and pasta.
Our last event was an evening of Ten Pin Bowling, followed by a pint in a pub. We had a great night of friendly banter and competition. You'll have to ask some of the men who won - although one person achieved two out of the three highest scores!
Our mst recent event was a trip out to the New Wine men's day at All Saints Church in Marple. The day was lead by Anthony Delaney and was called 'Men under pressure - Diamond Geezers'. He asks "When life pushes in on us, are we going to crumble like coal, or let God make us as strong as a diamond?"
Alan, one one our group, comments: "Ten men from St. Andrews attended a mens day at All Saints Church, Marple.
The guest speaker for the day was an ordained minister called Anthony Delaney. During the course of the day he related several anecdotes. However one particularly stood out for me.
Andy Hawthorne runs the Message Trust based here in Greater Manchester and prior to the current crisis in Haiti already had an ongoing outreach programme there.
About 2 to 3 weeks ago Anthony and Andy travelled to Haiti with the specific intention of delivering medical supplies tobeleagured communities around Haiti. Anthony had a small supply of cash, mainly 250 US dollars. At the first stop Anthony gave two girls 15 dollars each who were in need.
At the next stop it was apparent that some cash was needed for other supplies. Anthony handed over the balance of his dollars. Result, empty wallet!
At the next stop it was again obvious that some cash was needed to help purchase more essential supplies. Anthony thought he may have had some sterling cash in the wallet. On checking he was amazed to see the wallet contained a further 250 dollars. He handed over the cash and continued the joiurney. At the next stop the same situation arose, a crying need for some cash. Anthony again opened the wallet and lo and behold a further 250 dollars had appeared which was duly handed over. Anthony said to Andy "Have you seen this? Andy replied "Oh yes".
Isn't our God great?"
